Do I Need A Pendant Light?

I always get asked whether a pendant light should be added to a room and whilst my answer is almost always a ‘yes’ because I love the atmosphere and aesthetic they create, consideration must be given to how the pendant will impact the overall feel of the space.

When you want to add a pendant, it is always good to choose the right one. There are many different elements to consider such as colour, size, shape, style and positioning. Consider the colours used throughout the room particularly any accent colours. If you want the pendant to blend into the space without drawing too much attention, select one in a neutral colour. The same can be said for linear pendants above rectangle dining tables or island benches as they can be very sleek, so whilst they remain practical, they don’t pull to much attention away from other features throughout the room.

When a pendant is hanging pointlessly down from the middle of the room but there is nothing there for it to light apart from a patch of bare floor, this is normally an indication that you don’t need it. This is often the case in bedrooms where the pendant ends up somewhere near the end of the bed. In the living room, it is often slightly off-center of the coffee table or at one end of the dining table. Have a think about where it might be most useful and then about where it might look most amazing.

A pendant doesn’t a have to be in the middle of the room. It can be used as a feature piece in the corner of the room where you have negative space. In this way it can work as a piece of art instead of a picture. It also frees up floor space which will make the room look bigger.

The best and most common places to have a pendant light are above a kitchen island, above a dining table, above bedside tables or next to wall hung vanity mirrors in the bathroom. Always give thought to the direction of the light emanating from the pendant before confirming your choice, as you don’t want it casting too many unflattering shadows or blinding you whilst trying to complete a task.
